Country Session 2: Japan
Wednesday, 28 February
Conference Hall 2, Level 3
Country Session
"Basic Policy for Realization of GX (Green transformation)" compiled by Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry was approved by the Cabinet on February 10, 2023. The Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) selected seven role model projects aiming for business scale-up and cost reduction by 2030 as “Japanese Advanced CCS Projects”, with a prospect of implementing full scale CCS projects to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 based on this basic policy on June 13.
The projects (five of which plan to store CO₂ in Japan, and the remaining two to do so in Asia and Oceania), Japan aims to secure CO₂ storage of approximately 13 metric tons per annum (Mtpa) by 2030. Through these projects, Japan will seek to achieve approximately 120 to 240 Mtpa of CO₂ storage by 2050, some projects in APAC will locally add storage capacity, eventually contributing to carbon neutrality and the stable supply of energy resources.
In the Japan Country Session, speakers from the government agencies and E&P companies will introduce "Japanese Advanced CCS Projects" and the selected role model projects and discuss the initiatives for decarbonisation.
